Community Foundation for Kingston & Area (CFKA), the Adverse Childhood Experiences and Resilience Coalition of KFL&A, Rural Frontenac Community Services and Kingston Community Health Centres are presenting a rural community connections event in Verona on Wednesday, April 17

The free event is open to all ages and features a facilitated community discussion on building connections in rural communities to reduce the health and social impacts of isolation, and to foster resilience from the early years to the later years.

It is an opportunity to learn more about the emerging research on the value of social connection. It will also provide an opportunity to share experiences and ideas on how to build social connection with a wide range of people living in rural communities, of diverse ages and backgrounds.

Organisers welcome all residents of South, Central, and North Frontenac. If transportation is a barrier to participating, please contact the CFKA for assistance.

The event takes place from 10am until 1pm at Verona Lions Club and includes coffee, tea, snacks, and a light lunch.

“Our goal is provide a community forum to identify barriers and opportunities for rural community members to foster connection and belonging” says Stacy Kelly, CFKA’s executive director.

“Building connections in rural communities is unique. For centuries rural people have relied on their family and neighbours to survive. Rural living has evolved. Some people have moved away from their rural roots for school and opportunities and other urban people are seeking rural lifestyle. Despite computers, cell phones and social media we can still feel lonely unsure how to make connections. This event will create a conversation between people so we can learn more about building connections in rural communities,” said Louise Moody, Executive Director Rural Frontenac Community Services

CFKA’s Older Adults Connecting & Belonging (OACB) initiative, funded by the Sisters of Providence of St. Vincent de Paul Community Impact Fund, works with older adult-serving organizations and agencies in both rural and urban parts of Kingston & area. Our overarching goal is to create a sustainable, community-based system designed to prevent, mitigate and reduce the impacts of social isolation and loneliness on older adults.
