My heart bled as I learned of all the unmarked graves found at Canada’s residential schools this past year. But expressing one's sorrow is not sufficient. There is a better way: Support the efforts of Indspire, an organization that provides funds to assist indigenous students advance their education. This is my reconciliation effort.
Due to the generous support of donors, last year Indspire disbursed over $20 million in bursaries, scholarships, and awards to 6,245 Indigenous students across Canada. About 90% of their recipients graduate, and 70% of whose currently employed are working in fields that support the indigenous community. The largest numbers are in the health professions, with many others in business, social service, and education.
The big news today is that an anonymous donor has offered to match donations of $100 or more. I encourage you to be one of those donors. Send cheques to Indspire, 555 Richmond Street West, Suite 1002, Toronto, ON M5V 3B1. For more information, call 416-987-6015 or toll-free 1-855- 463- 7747, ext. 6015. This will be a charitable contribution on your tax return.
