Climate disasters of the past few years in surrounding communities proved that the Land O’Lakes area could be better prepared to deal with challenges people could face in the event of these major situations. The May 21, 2022 derecho prompted the Lions Club of Land O’Lakes to assess how they could best assist authorities during similar emergencies.

The Lions decided that their hall, located in Northbrook is an ideal location for a potential Emergency Centre. Their study revealed that with a willingness to assist others, capable people and money, their dream of Service to those in need could be achieved. Meanwhile, they started using their hall as a comfort centre to charge phones, cool off or warm up as required.

They have the building and workforce, what is needed is money. Quotations from contractors showed that a budget of $200,000.00 is needed to make their dream a reality. To that end, they have already accumulated $22,000.00, including a corporate donation of $10,000.00 from Mr. Gord Hunter of Lakeport Power. They pledged an additional $45,000.00 and are going after a $45,000.00 matching grant from LCIF (Lions Club International Foundation). With these funds, they feel that their building will be ready for round-the-clock occupation.

It is obvious that another $78,000.00 is needed before the doors can welcome people, pets and cherished items before their hall can be classified as a functional centre. Allowing for inflation and unexpected expenses they have decided to launch a Capital Campaign to get $90,000.00.

Members of surrounding communities, the Lions have been working hard to make sure you will soon have a suitable shelter, food and ability to communicate in the event of another disaster. What they ask of you is that you help them with their campaign by reaching out to people, corporations or organizations that may be financially able to assist.

Your life could be more pleasant knowing that a roof is available to shelter your loved ones during the next emergencies. If you can help, please contact: Red Emond at 613-336-8011 or email: This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.
