We are a small group of friends who have been meeting to talk about issues that concern us all, such as climate change, food security, habitat and biodiversity loss and water quality. It appears that the world as we know it is in jeopardy. Many of us may feel discouraged, confused or even resigned about how to make a difference on these global issues in our own backyard.

If you can relate, you may wish to join us in a new conversation about local solutions. We are calling this initiative Transition Storrington. We want to bring our community together around these critical issues and shift the focus to what positive actions we can take collectively and locally.

We’ve discovered that there are many initiatives around the world to address these issues at the local level.

One movement that interested us started in Totnes, England with the creation of the first Transition Town. The term “Transition Town” refers to the creation of grassroots community projects that aim to increase community self-sufficiency while reducing dependency on fossil fuels. This model focuses on renewed localization strategies, especially around food production and energy usage.  There are over 3,000 “Transition” communities worldwide including Peterborough and Cornwall, Ontario.

Each community's strengths and assets are unique and therefore, the projects and initiatives are unique.

Our group is interested in bringing our community together.  As a starting point, we’d like to get to know our neighbours and take stock of our “gifts” (skills & knowledge) and interests.  Let’s explore the possibility of creating our own Transition Community!

We’ve designed a series of fun and educational meetings and workshops beginning in January through the spring. Some of the meetings will feature permaculture, gardening, rewilding and mini-forests.  Workshops, led by local experts, will focus on fruit-tree growing and grafting, fruit shrub propagation and backyard mushroom farming.

We would love everyone to come to the first meeting to hear what people’s thoughts are, what they envision for the future of our community, and what they want to learn about and share.  Together we hope to discover what’s possible in our community.

The first meeting will take place on January 13 from 1-3pm at the Storrington Centre at 3910 Battersea Rd.  This and all meetings will be free and open to everyone. At the first meeting, we’ll watch and discuss an incredible film called Together We Grow (by Happen Films), while enjoying coffee, tea and cake!
