Perth Historical Society Presentation – Oct. 19 – 7:30pm – “Deconstructing The Historic Old Red House of Perth”. The Historical Society welcomes James Forrester who will take us through the deconstruction of Perth’s Old Red House. The historic “Old Red House,” painted white after a fire in 1865, was originally painted red as suggested by Charles Lennox, 4th Duke of Richmond and Commander-in-Chief of the Perth Military Settlement.  This 1816 building has served as British Army Headquarters, officer’s mess, inn/tavern, church, school, meeting place, printing office and finally dwelling during its history.  The House not only exemplifies the 200-year history of Perth, it also illustrates the concept of building a military waterway for defensive purposes, 10 years before the Royal Engineers started construction of the Rideau Canal in 1826.  The 200th anniversary of that event is coming up for Parks Canada/UNESCO in 2026. The power point presentation by James Forrester examines the disassembly and relocation of the “Old Red House”, and the materials for storage on the Algonquin College Perth Campus.  The core of the presentation focuses on the documented deconstruction of this 1816 building over the past four years.  In addition, the presentation will include a sample by Forrester’s wife, Stephanie, of her collages depicting the House’s interior over its life.  James Forrester grew up in Westport and attended both Rideau District High School and P&DCI.  His post-secondary studies included history, and library information science. James is currently President of the Peterborough Historical Society, and a member of the Selwyn Twp. Municipal Heritage Committee. The Perth and District Historical Society is dedicated to learning about and popularising our history and is a forum for discussion and celebration of our area’s rich culture and heritage.  The meetings are held the third Thursday of the month and are open to the public, at 7:30pm at the Royal Canadian Legion, Perth-Upon-Tay, Branch 244, home of the Hall of Remembrance, 26 Beckwith St. E. in Perth.  The usual “Toonie Fee” applies for each meeting ($2).  For information, contact Ellen Dean at 613-264-8362.  Our website at www.perthhs.org has additional information about us and items of interest related to Perth and district.  Visit our website for new articles submitted by members.

Mississippi
by Pearl Killingbeck

Thank you to Donna Virgin for providing this write-up: Sunday, October 1st, 2023 saw the closing of the Free Methodist Church which operated for approximately 81 years in the village of Mississippi Station. It was so nice to see so many of the former Mississippi families in attendance – Hannahs, McEwens, Riddells, Gibsons. The sermon by Rev. Jack Bradley and the special music by our musicians were wonderful. Following the service, a bountiful potluck dinner was held at the Snow Road Community Centre with around fifty people to enjoy the many fall dishes and desserts. A bittersweet day from start to finish!

Community Centre News (thank you, Elaine Moffitt, for this info): There was a great turnout for the book club event with Elizabeth Hay, with 47 attendees enjoying a wonderful afternoon. She read two passages from her book Snow Road Station, providing some background on her characters. The main character, Lulu, was from Late Nights on Air and a friend/editor suggested Lulu deserved a second book and it should be titled Snow Road Station. She answered questions about how her book characters were developed and about her plot lines. Elizabeth said she could not write a novel unless the character had flaws and may disappoint the reader. Elizabeth was accompanied by her husband Mark Fried who sold books and Elizabeth signed new and old books for many of the guests. It was a lovely afternoon with tea and cookies and Elizabeth.

We had a good turnout for the Oktoberfest Dinner with a tasty variety of side dishes to complement the sausages from Ulrich's in Pembroke: various potato dishes, sauerkraut, red cabbage, salads and more with lots of delicious desserts. The hall was decorated Oktoberfest style with streamers, steins and flags and there was a continuous show of pictures from a 2019 visit to the Munich Oktoberfest.

The upcoming Music Night on Thursday, October 26th features the jazz group – “Somerset Combo”. To get your tickets, contact Mike 613-278-1853 or e-mail This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it..

Snow Road Snowmobile Club: The bi-weekly breakfasts are back on the calendar. Check their Facebook page for a listing. The next one will be on 21st October.

Ompah
by Linda Rush & Marily Seitz

A number of members of the Ompah Book Club attended the meeting at Snow Road on Oct 12 to hear Elizabeth Hay talk about her recent novel, Snow Road Station.  Of special interest to those in the audience from Ompah was to learn that Elizabeth Hay’s cottage in the North Frontenac area is on Mosque Lake! Many of the settings in the novel are based in the Snow Road area, but it was interesting to learn that Elizabeth's knowledge of the area is actually based in Ompah.  Elizabeth gave a fascinating account of her life as an author, and of many of the themes and dramas in the book.  Copies were for sale, but sold out very early in the afternoon.

Many in the Ompah community are saddened to hear of the recent passing of Shirley Young.  Though lately living in Perth, Shirley was a long-time resident of Ompah, and has many friends and family in the area who will miss her very much.

Sympathy is extended to the John Whan Family on their loss after he succumbed to a battle with Lou Gehrig's disease.  Also thinking of the Young family on the loss of Brenda, as well as Ernie Koostachin's family - Ernie used to love to watch the ballgames at the ball parks!

Don't forget the Lions Breakfast on Oct. 21, proceeds going to the Salvation Army Local Christmas Hampers. Bring your cup and utensils!!

Congratulations to Wade Leonard on winning the Royal Canadian Geographic Society Giles Gagniere Medal for his drone program.  I'm sure all students love this class!

Don't forget to check your fire alarms and know your escape plans.

Enjoy reading the News? Please consider a donation to it.  Every donation large or small would be greatly appreciated due to costs of distributions etc.

Lots of events in the surrounding areas. Please check the Northern Happenings near the back of the News.  If features breakfasts, sales, music, games, etc. I'm sure there must be something there for everyone and it also supports "local".

Sympathy is extended to the family of the late Marian McCullough.

Congratulations to Micheal and Jen (Cota) Claro on their recent nuptials - rumour has it there was a speech by a special little boy that was absolutely the cutest!!!  Good job, Zander!

The Jackson family was super excited to be able to cheer on both teams as Elayna's Queen's ball team faced off against Kaitlyn Flear's Ottawa team in Kingston this past weekend!!

Henderson is going to be the place to be this Saturday!!!  There are lots of great vendors on site - over 40 of them with different items for all your needs. There will be live music with Jim MacPherson and you may be able to join in to Karaoke!!  Then Tim and Penny Cota have graciously donated pulled pork which will be a big hit at lunch time so be sure to get there early!  There will be face painting which will be perfect as you will notice some of the vendors dressing up for Halloween!!!  So come on out to support local and to help us keep the lights on at the Henderson United Church - the church on the corner with the big heart!  Event runs from 10am to 2pm. See you there!

Plevna
by Rhonda Watkins

I took a nice rest over the long Thanksgiving weekend, so the Plevna column was short but sweet last week. Here is the Euchre update for the last two weeks:

October 3rd, there were 28 people and $205.50 was raised for the Holy Trinity Anglican Church. Sandy T won high score with 88 and Rhonda W won most lone hands with 5. Jackie L went home with the consolation prize and it was a nice little wood framed mirror.

Oct 10th, there were 22 people and $151 was raised for Holy Trinity. Sandra W won high score with 87 and Phil F won most lone hands with 3, and MaryAnn W went home with a new bottle of hand soap for the consolation prize.

If you are looking for a fun night with friends, come on out to Euchre at the Plevna Clar-Mill Hall (6598 Buckshot Lake Road) at 6:50pm (games start at 7pm).

Just a heads up that there will be no Get Fit class and no Euchre at the Clar-Mill Hall on Tues, Oct 31st as the Halloween Party will be taking place that night.

If you are looking for a spooktacular night on Halloween, you are invited to the Plevna Clar-Mill Hall from 7-9pm for a Haunted Walk and Party! If you like trick or treaters coming to your door, you may want to consider bringing your candy to the hall and setting up along the edges of the parking lot for kids and parents to trick or treat and show you their costumes to add to the night of spooky fun!!

The next Clar-Mill Community Volunteer Meeting is Thurs, Oct 19th at 6:30pm at the Plevna Clar-Mill Hall. If you would like to join a fun team and get to know some nice people in our community, come on out and see what we are planning next!

Seniors and Law Enforcement Together (SALT) invites you to their FREE helpful & informative presentation regarding Wildland Fire Awareness and Preparedness by Kenneth Cox, the South Region Fire Advisor From Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry on Mon Oct 23 at 11am at the Plevna Clar-Mill Hall. Lunch will be provided. To register please, contact Rural Frontenac Community Services at 613 279-3151 or email This email address is being protected from spambots.
