It is alarming that we have not given all our neighbours the information needed to let them understand that what we have done to the earth’s atmosphere is serious, not frivolous, as Ms. Kool labels it. It is even more discouraging that some folks don’t realize that they have the power to help slow our damaging ways.
If when we, as individuals, decide to buy or order online some thing, we should recognize that our decision to buy that gadget makes machinery and computers in the gadget factory use power and will put delivery trucks on the road. Those results will cause wastes such as carbon dioxide to affect the atmosphere so that global temperatures will increase. That is fact, not guesswork.
Those effects are not “frivolous”. They are serious. The movement of damaging pests northward into our environment has shown how serious the effects of those changes can be. Demands of the markets have seriously reduced the areas left for natural processes. Our behaviour as consumers, pushed by marketers, is going to cause much more serious, long-lasting, global changes than some things that we have considered serious such as some potholes in our roads.
We need to think deeply about what is frivolous and what is serious.
