This is the final version of an article originally written on July 24, reflecting the status as of the close of nominations on July 27 Phil Archambault, an Inverary resident who ran for the Liberal Party in the 2016 Federal election, finishing second to long time Conservative MP Scott Reid, is making the move to municipal politics. “I think it is time for a change,” Archambault said moments after submitting his nomination papers on Tuesday afternoon (July 23) There are now three candidates for Mayor of South Frontenac, incumbent Ron Vandewal, and current Loughborough Councilor Mark Schjerning. County looking to assume downloaded roads in order to obtain more grant money

It might seem like an elaborate sleight of hand manoeuvre, but Frontenac County Chief Administrative Officer Kelly Pender is asking members of Frontenac County Council to consider setting up a county roads system, on paper only. And the payoff could be some heavy virtual paper money, as much as $5.7 million in grant money, every second year. Over time, the Federal and Provincial governments have developed different funding programs aimed at helping cash strapped municipalities pay for expensive infrastructure maintenance and upgrades on roads, bridges and other assets. The source of funding that has been available for this for the last 10 years is the Federal Gas Tax program, which provides $840,000 each year that is split among the townships on the basis of the…

Local green energy co-op faces new Ford reality

Until late last week, The Wintergreen Energy Co-op (WGC) had thirteen 250 kilowatt solar energy projects ready to proceed in South and Central Frontenac and rural Kingston under the Feed-in-Tariff (5) program. Not anymore. The WGC projects are among the 758 green energy projects that were cancelled this week by the new Ontario government. WGC President David Hahn said on Tuesday that the solar projects had been waiting for the final go ahead from Ontario’s Independent Electricity Service Operator (IESO), which was to come in the form a Notice to Proceed (NTP). “My understanding is that all of the projects waiting for the NTP have been cancelled,” he said when contacted at his farm on Canoe Lake Road, “which would include our projects”. Landlords in Frontenac County are encouraged to connect with Amanda Pantrey, new Rural Housing Liaison Worker, to find out about the incentives and perks that come with working with the rural Housing and Homelessness Collaborative Team, based out of Southern Frontenac Community Services in Sydenham. The Housing and Homelessness program in the County of Frontenac aims to serve high-needs, low-income families in need of assistance to secure and maintain safe, appropriate, and affordable housing. Few contested positions in municipal campaign

There is only one race for Mayor thus far in Frontenac County, and races in only a single district in North, South and Central Frontenac as the deadline for nominations nears. In North Frontenac, Mayor Ron Higgins is running for re-election, and incumbent Fred Perry is the only candidate for the two ward 1 (Barrie) positions. Gerry Martin and Vernon Hermer are both running again in ward 2 (Clarendon-Miller). In ward 3 (Palmerston) Fred Fowler is challenging the two incumbents, John Inglis and Denis Bedard. In Central Frontenac, Mayor Frances Smith is uncontested thus far. Incumbent Tom Dewey is running in ward 1 (Kennebec) as is Isaac Hale. Total ban in Addington Highlands, North Frontenac, Lananrk Highlands - campfires only in Central and South Frontenac by Jeff Green The weather has been and will continue to be hot and dry, and this is the case throughout the region. But fire permitting and the imposition of fire bans is overseen at the township level, so people might need a municipal overlay on their GPS if they want to know whether they can light a match. Here is an overview as of Tuesday morning, July 10, at 11:30 am In South Frontenac there is a Level 1 burn ban on. The Canada Day summer kickoff weekend was enjoyed by revellers across the region. Tricyclists in Sydenham   Canadaliens wearing their antennae in Sharbot Lake   Royal Canadian Regiment vets hitting the water in Ottawa on their way down the Rideau Canal to Kingston. They will be in South Frontenac at the Upper and Lower Brewera Locks this weekend.   Canada Day was a great day on the water for 8-year-old Reid Webb; he caught himself a nice 5lb bass, right here locally, from his secret spot on Sydenham Lake. Ten years and $3.7 million later, K&P Trail is dead in the water north of Tichborne, for now

The beginning of a stretch of water that extends for at least 500 metres on a section of the K&P trail between Bradshaw Road (South Frontenac) and Vinkle Road (Central Frontenac)
The K&P Trail may be suffering from the curse of the K&P railroad. The old Kick and Push, as it was not always affectionately called back in the day, was originally intended to run between Lake Ontario and the Ottawa River, from Kingston to Pembroke, K to P. However, costs were high and the money ran out, leaving a K&P that ran only from K to C, Kingston to Calabogie. Now, long after the K&P shut down, a trail being constructed on its track bed, which will bring the Cataraqui trail and Frontenac County into the Trans Canada Trail network, finds itself stalled at kilometre 64.5, of its intended 77 kilometre length, just about a kilometre north of the Bradshaw Road in Central Frontenac. Sitting in a coffee shop in early June, 62-year-old retired military officer Ralph Kennedy talks with a smile about the sport he loves. “I love archery. It’s a lot of fun,” says Kennedy, the outgoing President of the Kingston Archery Club. “I’ve always liked shooting and archery has the advantage of not needing a gun ownership. You can also reuse your ammunition. Gun ownership is very complex right now. Fairmount Home gets a facelift, brand-wise.

When Jon Allison Design and Avenue Strategy came to Frontenac County Council a couple of years back to present the new brand identity for Frontenac County, the got a pretty rough ride. Some members of council did not think the Fir trees in the design were representative, and the overall sense at the meeting was that the design was empty. Allison explained that it needed to be ‘empty’ in a sense so that it was both versatile and able to grow into its meaning through its application in the community. The vote to accept it was closer than anyone expected, but it did get accepted, which was a relief for c ounty staff because some giant banners were waiting at the back of the hall…

Transition from Early Years to EarlyON programs for children, families causes community concerns

The change in how early years child and family programs are funded has resulted in a situation that moved one area mother to start a petition on change.org, asking Rural Frontenac Community Services (RFCS) to rescind termination letters it sent out to five affected staff members. Jean Conlon, who has had two children go through the Early Years program, became concerned about the stress the staff members are going through and initiated the petition which by 3 p.m. on Tuesday afternoon had 193 signatures. “These ladies do an incredible job and they don’t deserve this stress,” Conlon said. OPP Officer opens up about PTSD

As part of the promotional campaign for third annual First Responders for PTSD fundraising golf tournament next month, a delegation came to Frontenac County Council on Wednesday morning (May 16). Frontenac Paramedic Services is helping to organise the event, and in addition to raising awareness the tournament raises money for K for Paws. K for Paws trains service dogs to help people dealing with various conditions, including autism, people with mobility issues, and people dealing with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) The delegation included Elizabeth Bailey, founder and Executive Director of K for Paws, and Juliane Porritt, an OPP officer from the Napanee detachment.
