Lawn Mower Races Season FinaleWhen the Northbrook Lions decided to put on the Redneck 500 lawn mower race back in July, they could not have known the event would lead to several more lawn mower races throughout the summer, and the establishment of the Eastern Ontario Lawn Mowers Association.

The whole thing really took off, says Rod Easton of the Arden Station/Station Diner on Highway 7, and we ended up talking on the phone a lot and setting up other events, including the Kingston Fair where we ended up being touted as a major attraction.

Easton decided to hold a season finale this Sunday in the yard behind his restaurant and Gas station, and after the races the Lawn Mower Association will hold elections for its first executive.

We have already been approached by 14 fairs for next year, so we had better figure out how to run this thing, Eaton said.

The lawn mowers themselves have improved tremendously over the season, according to Easton. Those who saw them in Northbrook will be surprised at how much faster they can go now, said Easton. The attraction of the sport for the participants is in working on the machines and the thrill of the ride. And it makes a great spectator sport. Easton adds.

Sponsors have been found who are covering the cost of running the race, and the admission to spectators is free, so head up to the Arden Station on Sunday. Races begin at 1:00 p.m.
