Development Officer Moves On

Brian Ritchie resigned as the Economic development Officer for the County of Frontenac last month. Ritchie, who was hired at the beginning of 2002 on a one-year contract by what was then known as the Frontenac Management Board, was involved in a wind power project on Wolfe Island, the fledgling Frontenac Centre, and was instrumental in the establishment of a Community Futures Development Corporation in the County.

Ritchies contract was renewed in January and his position was made into a permanent one as part of County administration restructuring that took place in February. He has moved on to a job at a provincial government office in Smiths Falls. The opportunity came forward and I thought it would be a challenge, Ritchie told the News last week about his decision.

There had been some question, raised by township councillors in North Frontenac, as to the effectiveness of the Economic Development office in the outlying regions of the county, and questions were posed to Ritchie about his activities by North Frontenac Mayor Stan Johnston at a County Council meeting in the early spring. These challenges will be taken up by the new person in the economic development position, who will be hired within the month.

The wind power project on Wolfe Island has been stalled as a result of a controversial freeze in Hydro rates in Ontario and a follow-up report on the Frontenac Centre is due to be released by a consultant in September.
