Ontario Snowcross Championby Samantha Overhoff Last winter, when he was just 17, Kirby McDonald of Cloyne started his first year in Snowcross competition. In May 2002 in Sarnia, he became champion of C.S.R.A Junior division (for 14 to 17-year- olds). Just a year after he started, he is already a champion. His proud parents Lorraine and Tim McDonald, and his sister, his greatest fan, support him. The snowcross season goes for about ten weeks, starting in December, if weather permits. Kirbys racing activities take him all over Ontario. He has been in Timmins twice, where he did hill climbs, and won three first place trophies. He has also been to Sudbury and Ottawa. In this Extreme sport, he is driven by both adrenaline and his amazing determination. Even when he was sick, he gives 100 percent in his races. One of Kirby's biggest helpers is his Uncle Jim, who is always there for Kirby, and was impressed by how well Kirby performed. Kirby has been riding on all sorts of machinery since he was four years old. This summer he will work on his knee reflexes by practicing on a birthday present from his generous parents, a brand-new 4 wheeler. Although it doesnt seem like a lot of work, Kirby has to exercise and stay in shape. It takes a lot of energy, and the knees need to be strong to take those jumps!

Snowcross is also an expensive sport, and Kirby has been grateful for support from sponsors like Nowells motors, Tims Auto Body, Carswell Racing Division and Bullet Graphics

After interviewing Kirby, I am anxious to see him race next winter. Until his next competition, Ciao!
