Northern Connections Learning Centre expands servicesby Janice Arthur If you are thinking of upgrading your skills, the Northern Connections Adult Learning Centre has made changes to meet your needs. They have moved to 12345 Main St. (Hwy 41) in Northbrook. "For the past four years we have been located across the hall from Gateway Adult Education Centre in Northbrook," says Janice Arthur, who instructs at the centre, "but we have outgrown the three small rooms. We needed more space for computers and group activities." Janice feels that the new spacious site will give students fresh and different opportunities to build their skills. "While we are maintaining the program's focus on teaching writing, comprehension, math and computer skills, we will be able to branch out into more goal-directed, hands-on learning." Last year, in partnership with Gateway, learning took a new slant, through a cooking project. As well as teaching new skills, this project provided meals for seniors at the Lions Hall. "Versatility and meeting each person's needs is what is important. In the new premises we have a group training room, more room for computers, a kitchen and a small woodworking shop. With a kitchen, students can continue the course in nutrition and budgeting, and the shop will allow pre-apprenticeship training." Arlene Uens, who teaches employment skills, will be available on Wednesdays to teach workshops and pre-employment skills. According to Arlene "The jobs are out there! We are offering weekly skills-training workshops to show you how to put your best foot forward to reach your goals and get employed." Lisa Brash will be organizing community workshops. "In the next two months we will be offering Food Handler Training, Smart Serve Bartending, and a general information session about small business. Some other topics we are considering are: Women's Health Issues, Gardening in the North, Landlord and Tenant Issues or Using the Internet," informs Brash. "If there is a workshop subject that you are interested in attending or facilitating, please call us at 336-0691." On Fridays, Kelly Cowdy introduces computers in a friendly way. Even if computers strike terror in you, her relaxed approach will put you at ease. "Many students who need to refresh their writing and math skills find learning through the computer is a great help. The internet is a great research tool that is easily accessible to anyone," says Kelly. The CAP centre, which provides public access to computers and the internet, has also moved up the street with Northern Connections. Joyce Bigelow, Executive Director of N. Connections, feels that "It will be an excellent partnership. Not only will there be more computers available to the learners, but other community members who access CAP can connect with opportunities to learn or volunteer at the learning centre." Please call 336-0691 for more information.
