Remembrance Day in Flinton

by Jeff Green

A crowd of onlookers, cadets, veterans, local politicians and young children gathered at the Cenotaph in Flinton on Sunday for a pre-Remembrance day ceremony and church service under unusually sunny and warm skies.

Among the colour guard were Legion members Frank Matascheskie, Bill Tibble and Morris Hamilton, and cadet Jayanna Hair.

Comrade Barbara Wise of Legion Branch 328 (Northbrook) was the Master of Ceremonies and she introduced the Land OLakes Glee Club, who led the assembly in the singing of O Canada

The Cloyne Cadets, under Sgt. Major Robin Godard, assisted with the wreath laying.

Among the wreath layers were Willis Rosenplot, a veteran of World War 2 and a charter member of Branch 328. Steve Macbeth, of CFB Petawawa represented the Canadian Military Forces, Dave Morris represented veterans of the Korean Wars and Canadian Peacekeepers, and Tim Trickey laid a wreath on behalf of the Cadet Corps. All told about 25 wreaths were laid at the cenotaph.

Reeve Ken Hook of Addington Highlands and Mayor Ron Maguire of North Frontenac also laid wreaths.

At a special service after the ceremony at the Flinton Cenotaph, there was an opportunity to reflect on the sacrifices made in the past century by Canadian soldiers, a memory made only more poignant by the ever-present talk of war in the global media at this time.

Afterwards, a dinner was hosted by the Legion at the Northbrook Lions Hall. This year there were 66 Legion members, invited guests and others at the dinner, which featured a slide presentation by Russ Storring about the Mercury of Hope project which has been bringing assistance to the children of Afghanistan.

Finally, at 3 pm Cecil Hawley acted as MC and Barbara Wise conducted a service at the Pine Meadow Nursing home.

The Royal Canadian Legion Branch 328 will be conducting a Remembrance Day service in Denbigh on November 11.
