No news is good news!

What a spring and early summer! Politics galore and I was glued to the television screen and newspapers far too much of the time. It was intriguing but I have had my fill of world, national and provincial events. I am tired of others speculating about: awaking Far East oriental giants, senseless killings in the Middle East, elections and broken promises in Canada and Ontario, gang knifings/shootings in Toronto and miserable weather.

Off will go the TV and on the cancellation of newspapers. I may read the local giveaway newspapers; we get three of them that cover local events from Perth to Havelock and Kingston to Denbigh. The various church activities, birthdays and anniversaries are of interest in only the local hamlet in which they occur and I shant miss them but I should try to keep abreast of our local problems.

Municipal Councils have been in power since November and this fall they will be a third of the way through their mandates. After a year to get their feet firmly established and a summer of barbeque photo ops this fall should be the time for progress reports. To date there has been little but public criticism and complaints about Council efforts and I am looking forward to some success stories on garbage disposal, drinking water problems, ATVs invading our roadways, ambulance control, roads and fairness in property assessment. Dare I hold my breath?

Success can be achieved as I have already attended one impressive accomplishment. A very informative Local Service Fair held last week in Plevna was sponsored by North Frontenac Council and well organized by Councilor Will Cybulski. It drew over 40 exhibitors but unfortunately few residents chose to attend, at least during the time of my visit. Was inadequate advertising a factor?

What will I do with this newly found time? Ill invade the patio as soon as we get some reasonably hot summer weather. Weeds are growing well in the garden but I question my sanity fighting Mother Nature by cultivating the earth under a hot sun. We fair-haired oldsters are told to guard against cancer causing sun rays and mosquitoes; both very reasonable rationale to sit on the shaded patio resplendent only in insect repellant. Shady isolation and a cool beverage at hand is what the doctors order; when you can find one who will see you. Oops, sorry, I just cannot get away from our societal problems.

I shall read while supping; have to keep up the liquid content in the old bod. I have a couple of good books ready. The controversy about Dan Browns, The Da Vinci Code has seduced me, nothing like a religious whodunit to get the mind in turmoil and it will be a good contrast to a rereading of Chestertons Father Brown Omnibus. Who said anything about mental relaxation?

I shall snooze between sups and chapters.

I shall muse and prepare myself for my fall resumption of windmill chasing. Ah! The Adventures of Don Quixote is another required rereading for the summer; he and I seem to have a lot in common.

I shall relax and let the blood pressure drop hoping to forgo artificial medication. Isnt it pleasant having Mother Nature salve our wounds naturally? Perhaps a patio summer listening to waves lapping, birds singing and bugs buzzing will do the trick.

Does this mean no Mazinaw Musings in the Frontenac News during the summer? No, unless I get fired; can volunteers get fired? The editors have been tolerant about the 132 Musings since September 2000 and, God willing, I promise to continue testing their tolerance biweekly unless you, dear readers, suggest I shut up.
