Beleaguered landowners to become TV stars

When Ron & Elva Price, Peter Griesbach, and Marilyn Crawford found out the properties they owned had been staked by mining prospectors, it set them all on a difficult legal and political rigmarole that continues to affect their lives. Later this month, it will also bring them to TV screens across Ontario.

Robert Prowse, a documentary producer with Studio 2, a popular evening newsmagazine program with TVO, recently spent two days visiting Griesbach and Crawford in Bedford district of South Frontenac, and at the Price farm in Olden district of Central Frontenac.

The program will focus on property ownership, since it turns out people may not own what they think they own, Prowse told the News.

People from Northern Ontario often point out that decisions are made by people in Toronto who dont understand the North. In this case, ironically, it seems the Mining Act, which works in the context of northern Ontario, is being applied in the South, where the land use is so different, Prowse said.

The 12-15 minute documentary will air later this month. Look to upcoming issues of the News for the exact airing date.
