South Frontenac Township Council,Councils mid-month meeting was brief and relatively uncontentious. The only tie vote was on a resolution regarding Fishers (the ones with the fur coats, not the ones in the bass boats...). This was in support of a similar resolution passed by the Township of Augusta in response to a Fisher attack on a child. The resolution states that Fishers are seen as the number one nuisance animal in Ontario, and implies that the MNR is not taking the problem seriously, because the MNR has said that Fishers are not a threat to human safety, and that their numbers are on the decrease. The resolution goes on to recommend that the quota on Fishers be opened "in order to gather more information on those trapped, which can then be plotted for a minimum of two years to allow not only a more accurate population count on Fishers, but more accurate study of the animal in general."

Councillor Hahn commented that he felt deer were much more of a nuisance, both on the roads and in the gardens, than Fishers. No one suggested that with a two-year open quota on Fishers, the population count might not be any more accurate than it is now, just lower. Mayor Leonard broke the tie by supporting the motion.

The 2003 Capital and Operating Budget will be approved at a 5:00 p.m. meeting on Tuesday, May 27.

Council moved In Camera to discuss several matters, and to set a meeting date to review the Amalgamation Report prepared by staff.
