Desiree is home thanks to small newspapers!

A week ago last Saturday, Desiree, a ten-inch rainbow lorikeet, chewed through the screen of the porch and flew away.Despite days of searching the Bell Line Road area, she wasn't found. On Monday, an ad was put in the Frontenac News, and on Thursday, a woman in Maberly called. She'd read in the Frontenac News about a lost parrot who would land on shoulders and was used to people, and on the same day, she'd read in the Westport Mirror about a found bird who would land on your shoulder and was used to people.Desiree had flown from Sharbot Lake to Westport!

When John Tobin, a young man who works at The Green Shingle Lodge, picked up a green parrot from the punch bowl where she'd landed, she climbed to his shoulder. He decided to hang on to her and put an ad in The Westport Mirror. Here's the rub. There are few people that get both the Mirror and The Frontenac News, but this lady is one of them.

Desiree slept all the way home through a heavy rain and lightning storm. She is truly a miracle bird. She had had no previous experience flying any farther than from a table to a sofa, yet had flown about 60km and landed in a punch bowl.Though Desi shows no signs of wanting to escape again, the screened porch is in the process of being reinforced with chicken wire.

In the excitement of hearing that Desiree was found, Desi's owner did not get the name of the person who called from Maberly. She would love to thank her in person, and hopes she will call and identify herself. Thanks also to John Tobin for putting in the newspaper ad and to the Green Shingle Lodge.

Roads Department left mess

The Roads Department have just passed by, cutting the hedges of Brewer Road. They might just as well have used sewing scissors, for all the mess they left behind is worse than the head high tall weeds we had before. If my sons had cut hay the way the Roads Department cut the hedges, they would not have been able to sit down for a week of Sundays. Shame on you, Sharbot Lake Roads Department; we pay higher and higher taxes and receive shoddier and shoddier work for our money.

Perhaps we the taxpayers should start advertising on a provincial and/or national level?

Re: Sarah Generoux CD

My husband Don and I were reading the article [in Marilyn Meeks column] you so generously had in your newspaper regarding our daughter Sarah Generoux, and her CD that is for sale at Kim Gould's Junction Factory Outlet. There is one statementthat is not exactly correct, however, and we would like to correct it. Sarah has sung with Keith Glass but only in the recording studio. He is on her CD however, playing mandolin and guitar, specifically on the track "Crazy". We didn't want prospective buyers ofSarah's CD to think that Mr. Glass is singing withher on this CD, and we would appreciate it if you would print this correction. We would also like to thank you for giving Sarah some media exposure.

She does plan to follow through with a third CD with Jon Van Wingerden and Keith Glass producing it at Audio Valley Recording Studio here in Perth as soon as Don is feeling better.

Thanks to Marilyn also for the Get Well wishes for Don. It brightened up his day to know his "neighbours" are thinking about him.
