Pine Meadow golf tournament hits a new high

By Jeff Green

The annual Pine Meadow golf tournament has been a success from the start, and in this, its third year, the tournament increased the level of profit threefold, raising a total of $10,690 for the nursing home in Northbrook.

This increase in revenue was accomplished without diminishing the fun level of the event for participants, even for those who had to put up with the four guys in bright yellow Hawaiian shirts who didnt always know the way from tee to green.

After five hours on the Hunters Creek golf course, the winning team (who were not wearing Hawaiian shirts) of Don Hinchey, Ross Allen, Roger Tryon and Lorraine Steele will have their names engraved on the Pine Meadow trophy, courtesy of an 8 under par score of 56 in the best ball tournament. Lorraine Steele was credited with making the crucial birdie putts that put the team into first place, two strokes ahead of their nearest competitors.

The Ford Explorer that was provided by Bence Motors to be won by whoever managed to get a hole in one on the 8th hole, ended up going unclaimed, but that didnt dampen the golfers spirits much.

Once the tournament was over, participants sat down to a steak BBQ, followed by the cre de la cre, a pie auction that raised several hundred dollars more for the tournament, and put the total raised over the $10,000 mark.

Len Tufford, who served as one of the pie auctioneers, was also the key organiser of the event, and he deserves much of the credit for its overwhelming success. Rumour has it he has already started thinking about how to improve the event for 2005.

While fundraising events tend to have a life span of a few years, the Pine Meadow Golf Tournament seems to be just hitting its stride, its future looking as bright as the weather was on June 5 at Hunters Creek.
