This weekend was a busy one as we toured various locations and tried to take in as many activities as possible. Many of us headed over to Sydenham for the Annual Christmas Parade and the SFCSC was on hand to collect donations for the food bank. The SF Fire Department organized a fabulous event that was well attended and the weather cooperated as floats paraded along the main route.

Later on, we headed to Style Revival. For years, I have driven past the small subtle sign, uncertain as to what this truly was.  I have been in and out of the Verona Free Methodist Church numerous times with the SFCSC Diner’s Club, but never ventured into the basement. To my surprise, this is a well-kept secret, that needs to be mentioned for all to share!

Back in 2012, Kielo Carlson came up with an idea to offer a space for those in need to come and explore a store where all the items are FREE.  Yes, FREE.  As I descended the staircase out back, I was inquisitive as to what I would find.  A long hallway drew me to the sound of laughter and chatter.  The clean space, enticed me in.  The women were dressing dolls up in creative outfits to promote their spunky personalities as they awaited a new home. Rows of well-organized clothing filled the room but without the usual sense of ‘chaos or sadness’ that some of the other used clothing stores present. Each row, neatly presented, sorted, organized, clean, and a GIFT.

Bethany, a fiery haired helper (Kielo’s daughter, down for a visit) told me to ‘look around, and take whatever you need’ ... I smiled, a generous offer, however, I stated ‘I am here to give, not receive’, and what do you need?  What is this place? She explained that gently used donations are always accepted on an ongoing basis including socks, underwear, coats, and boots. However, they do not accept household goods. But towels and linens are in great demand and shoes, costume jewellery, purses, and mitts go a long way. This is a complete store for the entire family, men, women, and children.  Kielo noted that “we only offer ‘gently used’ items” that should be dropped off on Wednesdays between 10-1.

They will be opening on Saturday in December on the 9th and the 16th from 10-1 for anyone to donate or take as they need. Everyone in the community is welcome, and this location has helped 1000s of residents over the past decade +. Please consider donating to this local cause where your items will be readily accepted and truly appreciated for those in need or who have fallen on tough times.  Please call 613-374-1232 for more information.

Cole Lake Christmas was on the way home and after some yummy hot chocolate served up by reindeer ‘Emma’, I had a brief chat with Mr. & Mrs. Claus who were taking photos with excited kids. They were eager to meet those that had been ‘nice’ all year and were in jolly spirits as children came and went with glee.  Inside the Free Methodist Church, the halls were lined with parents and kids as the Minister led the group in song.  Jingle Bells was belted out with an acoustic skill as the gathering sang favourites of the festive season.  I snuck past and headed towards the hall where tables were lined up for crafts and cookie decorating. Gifts bags lined the walls ready for the artists to arrive and create joyous treats they could take home and share with their friends.  The volunteers scurried about as worktables were decorated and art supplies were laid out with creative precision. I even managed to get a peek at the main stage that was decorated with large, overstuffed animals as an accurate Nativity Scene laid in waiting for the 3 scheduled performances to begin. A live telling of the tale for all to enjoy.

After a brief return home, we headed back out to the exciting match at the Frontenac Arena where the OPP and South Frontenac Fire battled it out on the ice. The teams came together for a friendly rival match while food donations were accepted as an entry fee to support the community food bank.  The stands were packed as well as the upper level where the Breakaway Café was serving up hot food to the hungry masses.  The two mascots kept younger fans engaged in dance and distraction as the adults encouraged their friends and families on the ice.  This is a very well attended event.  Not that it matters, but bragging rights are going to the firefighters, who bested the OPP by  a score of 6-5.

Thank you to everyone who attended and for our ‘local’ heroes who keep us safe.  You are appreciated.

Such a great community, caring people, and let’s keep it going … ’tis the season 365, 24x7.
