Carolyn Eva Elizabeth Shaw passed away on May 3, 2025, at the age of 87. A graveside service was held on May 27, 2025, at Sandhill Cemetery in Sunbury, Ontario, followed by a Celebration of Life at the Storrington Lions Hall.
She is lovingly remembered by her brother, Robert (Molly); her son, Barry (Bonnie); her daughter, Pamela; and her grandchildren, Kristen and Michael Dawson. She also leaves behind many cherished great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and great-nieces and nephews.
Carolyn was predeceased by her longtime partner, Doug Mayne, with whom she had been together for over 40 years, as well as her parents, Leslie and Mabel Moreland. She was also preceded in death by her daughter, Debbie; her sister, Marjorie (Ford) Thompson; and her brothers, Bill (Hazel) Moreland, Vernon, fondly known as Gus (Jean) Moreland, Wray (Marie) Moreland, and Richard (Susan) Moreland.
Carolyn was raised in Sunbury, where her family owned and operated a dairy farm. She was one of seven children, and while the farm is no longer in operation, the original homestead still stands. She had a deep connection to her family roots. She loved returning to the farm to visit her sister-in-law, Susan, who had once owned the property, and later, her brother, Robert, and Molly, who resided on part of the original land. These visits were filled with reminiscing and treasured family moments.
She attended grade school in Sunbury in a one-room schoolhouse before graduating from Sydenham High School. Carolyn spent her entire life in the Kingston area, working at Sears Canada for over 25 years. Alongside Doug, she also served as a building superintendent in various Kingston apartment buildings for many years.
Carolyn had a passion for dancing, and she and Doug were a joy to watch on the dance floor. She was well known for her delicious rhubarb coffee cake, which she often brought to Robert and Molly, made with fresh rhubarb from their garden. She enjoyed fishing, shopping trips, and cheering on the Toronto Blue Jays.
With her infectious laugh, wonderful sense of humour, and fierce independence, Carol was a hardworking and resilient woman who faced life’s challenges with remarkable strength.
Though she will be deeply missed, we take comfort in knowing she is at peace, reunited with family and friends who went before her.
