Is history linear or cyclical? Do we all start at a point in life and drive to an end; or do we keep on turning in cycles with no beginning or end?

I have never been good at memorizing historic dates or names. History to me was always the stories that created the events, the vibrant recounts of moments in time.

I visited museums not to read the names, but to hear the tales.

Why talk of History today?

Every Lions Club has a story.

Ours, the Lions Club of Land O’Lakes, commenced in 1969 with 38 men who decided it was time to serve their community. This community.

In the very early days, yes, way back in 1969, our club started the Toll Road. In 1982, our club started the telephone tree aimed at reaching vulnerable members of the community in case of an emergency.

Today, we still create annual repeats of the Toll Road. Today, we are venturing, again, into an emergency preparedness plan that will include a telephone tree. Does that make our history cyclical?

Different faces ... different names ... all chanting one theme over the course of the years: we serve with the pride and heart of the Lion.

Those names, faces, badges of honour, moments of glory of our club will soon be placed in a glass cabinet at the Cloyne Pioneer Museum.

As you drop in and take a peek through the glass, try to read beyond a photo frame; try to listen past an award.

Find the story.

I know I will.

I will hear that first Roar. I will see their clenched fists as they raised their voice.

What will you hear?

Till we meet again in a Roar, enjoy the glorious sunny days, listen to the chirping birds, and yes, starting the 28th of Aug visit the Lions at the museum. Let their stories of serving live forever. (Note: if you want to see more of the Lions History, we can arrange a visit to our hall in Northbrook)
