Desert Lake Family Resort campers donate to the "People Helping People"fund
In 2005, campers at Desert Lake Resort continued the tradition of providing outstanding support to the patients of the Kingston Regional Cancer Centre and their families. Every year these dedicated vacationers conjure up new and creative ways to donate money to “People Helping People”.“People Helping People” is a fund that provides money directly to cancer patients, thus lightening their load so they can dedicate more energy to fighting the disease. If a patient needs taxi fare to get to chemotherapy, the money is there. If they need money to hire a housekeeper or a babysitter, it is provided.
Most of the resort guests take part, volunteering in many ways. There have been head and beard shaves, horseshoe tournaments, swimming challenges across the lake, beef barbeques, bottle drives, and a brown bag auction.
This year June Goodberry and friends stitched a beautiful quilt for raffle that brought in over $1,000. A watercolour painting was donated by Brendy Daly, which helped to raise the overall total. The owners of the resort also thanked neighbour Linda Penrose for making and donating the photo postcards. This fall, the campers put together a cookbook, which will support the fund. It is hoped that many of the people that pass through the resort will purchase a cookbook.
Simone Glendenning was recognized by the management of Desert Lake Family Resort as one of the most ardent supporters of these activities, always working behind the scenes to make things happen.
Keep
up the good work; this common goal makes camping more fun. In 2005, the
campers’ goal was to raise $5000, and they are proud to say that this
goal was not just surpassed, but almost doubled to over $9,400! The
resort will be under new management next year, and Marni and Bill
Pedersen’s daughter and son-in-law, Bret and Sally Colman plan to keep
the commitment to this worthwhile fund. Keep up the good work!
