Feature Article - August 3, 2006Trillium grant for Crow Lake schoolhouse
byJeffGreen
Members of the Crow Lake Community Association (CLCA) have been working on turning the old schoolhouse in the village into a viable community centre, and this week their efforts received a significant boost when the Trillium Foundation sent them a cheque for $56,000.
The monies will enable the citizens of the village to “renovate the annex of the old school house to have services (water, sewage, heat, kitchen, appliances, washrooms, handicap access and basement storage area) installed so usage is increased and more and different activities can occur,"said Joe Slater, who has been appointed by the CLCA Board of Directors to be in charge of this project.
The building is owned by the Township of Central Frontenac , and managed by the CLCA under a 30-year lease. Use of the hall for events has been limited until now, mainly because of a lack of washroom facilities. With the renovations, the hall will be “available for people who want to use it for parties, family gatherings, and for community groups such as the Greater Bobs and Crow Lake Association, Rideau Valley Conservation, and the Friends of the Tay Watershed,” Slater said.
With the money in hand, the Crow Lake Community Association is hoping to be able to take out a building permit within the week, and have a contractor on site by Labour Day.
“We hope to hold our community Christmas dinner in the hall this year,” Slater said.
“Credit must go to Joe Slater for this grant,” said CLCA Vice President Ludwig Ratzinger. “He took on the job of filling out the 60-page trillium grant application form and steered the application through the Trillium process. We couldn’t have done this without Joe.”
