Harrowsmith Free Methodist Church has long been a beacon of faith and fellowship. With a history spanning over a century, it stands as a testament to the resilience, devotion, and unwavering spirit of its congregation.

Founded in 1919 by C.V. Fairbairn, the church overcame significant challenges in establishing a Free Methodist presence in the community. What began as a small but faithful congregation grew into a cornerstone of Harrowsmith, where generations have gathered to worship, support one another, and deepen their spiritual journey.

In recent years, a renewed sense of purpose has invigorated the church under the leadership of Pastor Craig Peters. With over 40 years of experience and a Doctor of Ministry, Pastor Craig has inspired the congregation with his vision of faith, growth, and service. His engaging sermons and heartfelt dedication to creating a welcoming atmosphere have led to steady growth, with over 215 individuals now attending services each Sunday.

When I spoke with Pastor Craig, who is originally from Parham, his animated tone indicated that he seeks to “find everyone’s true potential, block out the noise, and open their hearts to their faith.” His journey through different congregations has deepened his understanding of spiritual leadership, and now, with a renewed sense of purpose, he is committed to fostering a welcoming space where faith flourishes, lives are enriched, and the community thrives together.

Recognizing the need for new space for a growing congregation, , the church embarked on a transformative renovation. Through efforts from volunteers and tradespeople, the main hall has been revitalized. It is more than just a physical renewal, it symbolizes unity, hope, and the power of collective dedication.

Stepping into the newly refreshed sanctuary, one is, oddly enough, uplifted by the scent of fresh carpet and the warmth of sunlight streaming through expansive windows. The redesigned stage stands at the heart of the space, ready to welcome voices raised in worship. A once-dividing wall has been removed, creating a more open and inviting area for both new and returning parishioners. Modernized with newly installed televisions and enhanced sound capabilities, the sanctuary now fosters an even more immersive worship experience. Traditional pews have been replaced with comfortable seating, accommodating up to 350 guests.

Behind the scenes, volunteers worked to prepare for the much-anticipated June 1st reopening. Every polished floor, every rearranged chair, every meticulous detail was touched by the hands of those who believe in the power of faith-driven service. Their work was not merely about creating a beautiful space—it reflected a community bound together by purpose and love.

The reopening celebration was a momentous occasion, bringing the congregation together in gratitude for the volunteers who made the impossible possible. It was a testament to the strength of commitment and the profound impact of service rooted in faith.

Looking ahead, Harrowsmith Free Methodist Church remains more than a place of worship—it is a hub where faith and fellowship thrive. Beyond Sunday services, the church serves as a centre for community connection, offering rental space for events, hosting beloved traditions such as the annual Christmas Dinner, and fostering growth through multi-generational groups and events, including the upcoming  August Kids Camp.

Guided by Pastor Craig, it remains a vibrant and welcoming place where faith thrives, not only within its walls but throughout the broader community.

Pastor Craig’s unwavering faith and love for his community are matched only by his passion for raspberry pie, a sweet reminder that joy is found in both the sacred and the simple.
