According to Shane Cook, Sydenham Golden Eagle’s hockey coach, hockey history was made at the KASSAA hockey finals on February 27th 2025. For the first time since hockey was introduced as a sport in the district, 32 years ago, SHS hockey won the KASSAA championships in a “2-1 nail biter” over Frontenac Secondary School.
“Every single one of these guys has played their guts out this season and definitely deserved to win,” said Cook in an address to the SHS student body at a recognition assembly. “I am so unbelievably proud of them all, there’s tough and then ‘there’s Sydenham tough’ and these guys are Sydenham tough and nothing beats that.”
On March 4, 2025, the team played in the Eastern Ontario Athletic Association’s championships. They lost their first game 4-0 and won the second game 9-3, winning SHS’s first EOSSAA hockey game in the school’s history. That was not enough, however, to advance to the final.
Cook remains hopeful and proud of the team.
“We put SHS hockey on the map this year and that is something we are all very proud of,” he said. “We have a very young team and lots of great future prospects so hopefully this season is just the beginning of a dynasty.”
