The South Frontenac Stocksport Club is set to host teams from across the Americas, and the Austrian Ambassador, in Harrowsmith.

South Frontenac Stocksport Founder and President Karl Hammer is excited about the upcoming tournament.

Hammer started playing the game, which is sort of a mix between dry land Curling and European games such as Bocce, Boules and Lawn Bowling, in the parking lot at Sydenham High School, on summer evenings with his father and some other friends, slowly getting people hooked on the sport.

By the time they had a club together, the dream of building a dedicated Stocksport pad took hold, and with it the idea of hosting an international tournament.

Now that there is a multi-use facility at Centennial Park, it is time for that tournament to get underway.

“Over this weekend, on Saturday and Sunday, we are holding a Canada Cup, which will be a chance for all of the international players to get acclimated to the court.

“I’ve been to tournaments where the tournament started before we knew the conditions, so this will help everyone and make the Americas Cup a better tournament,” said Hammer.

On Monday, July 24, at 3pm, the Austrian Ambassador and local dignitaries will join in for the Americas Cup opening ceremonies, which will be a colourful event.

The tournament runs Tuesday and Wednesday, the 25th and 26th, and it includes a round-robin team competition as well as individual skills competitions.

Any time either day will be a good time to see some of the hemispheres best Ice Stockers.

If the competition goes down to the wire some of the team games on Wednesday afternoon could be instrumental in determining a champion, and could draw some local fans in.
