It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Ellen Good on May 16. Many knew Ellen as an expert weaver.
Ellen’s love of weaving - Ellen was a master weaver. She wove professionally for over 50 years. In her weaving life’s work, she was an actively engaged member of weaving organizations and guilds in North America.
Ellen generously shared her weaving expertise with others in many capacities. She was an expert in specialized dye techniques, taught weaving, participated in arts and textile shows and exhibits.
Ellen set up weaving studios and created a heritage textile weaving program for rural women so they could practice weaving as a small business.
Some of Ellen’s weaving projects included setting up and weaving Catalogne blankets, weaving tapestries, setting up looms for various projects including an overshot sampler project, participating in sheep to shawl competitions.
She was the author of Fabrics of Pioneer Life, a photo study of weaving artifacts from the 1800s to early 1900s. It was published at the culmination of the MERA Heritage Weaving Program in McDonald’s Corners.
Ellen was a long-time resident of rural Frontenac County.
She and her husband, Peter lived at Lothlorien Rural Cooperative, where Ellen served as an active member and president for several years. She was also a member of the North Frontenac Emergency Response Team for over 25 years.
Ellen (who was not one to brag) also travelled widely in the world and was a sought-after crew member as a deck hand on sailing vessels. She had a preference for single malt Scotch in the evenings.
Unfortunately, during the past several years, Ellen had to restrict her life due to severe chronic pain.
Ellen is survived by her husband Peter, stepson Noah and his wife Fee Lin, grandchildren Chloe and Daphne, brother Walter. She is predeceased by sister Margaret and Susan.
A celebration of Ellen’ s life was held on Friday, May 16.
Among the charities Ellen supported the most local was THE TABLE in Perth.
