On Sunday, April 27, 2025 in his 83rd year, Donald Gordon Bates took his final train to heaven. Leaving behind to mourn his passing is his loving wife of 28 years Linda Bates, Linda’s children Tina Benson (John) and Todd Benson (Lisa), grandson Alexander Benson, Don’s son Blaine Bates and granddaughter Leslie Bates.
Also deeply missed by his sister Donalda Lockhart, and by Linda’s siblings Deb (Jim), Fred (Carole), Ted (Susie), Anne (Jim), and their families. Don always had a good joke to share and was a father figure to many. He thoroughly enjoyed being a volunteer driver for Children’s Aid, and was known as Poppy throughout the community.
Don was an Educational Assistant with the Limestone School Board for many years. In retirement he had many joys; driving the Verona Express, working in his gardens, or in his shop building something. Whatever organization Linda was in, Don was there by her side. He will be missed by many friends as well. We are extremely thankful for the excellent care Don received on Connell 10 at KGH. At Don’s request, donations can be made to South Frontenac Food Bank or Princess Elizabeth Lodge.
A Celebration of his Life will be held at the Golden Links Hall, 4186 Colebrook Rd, Harrowsmith on Sunday, May 25, 2025 from 1-4 pm. We will raise a glass at 1:15 pm., refreshments will be served. All are welcome to share a story and reminisce of a life well lived. The train has left the station. Rest in Peace Don.
