It is with deep sadness that we share that John passed away peacefully on April 27, 2025, at Lakeridge Health Bowmanville. Our heartfelt thanks to the staff for their care and kindness. Born on October 19, 1943, John is predeceased by Lorraine, his wife of over 56 years. John will be missed by his daughter, Heather, and by Lorraine’s brother, Howard, and his wife, Nadine. He will be remembered fondly by nephews Brian (Sharry), Richard (Louise), Dave (Lynne), Don (Joanne), and Ed (Cindy), as well as family friend and unofficially adopted daughter, Claire.
He will also be greatly missed by Heather’s dog, Penny, who made it her mission to make John fall in love with her, and succeeded spectacularly, despite him insisting he wasn’t a dog person.
John and Lorraine lived in Henderson all their lives before moving to Bowmanville in 2022 to be closer to Heather, but it is safe to say that Henderson — and the house and yard they nurtured and cared for for so many years, nestled in a community full of family and neighbours who became family — continued to be home in their hearts.
John had a long career with the civil engineering firm Totten, Sims & Hubicki, where he conducted pre-engineering work and supervised job sites throughout the region, including close to home on the Arden Road and, for many years, on the Buckshot Lake Road at Plevna.
In retirement, John enjoyed spending time in nature, walking and kayaking, and could often be found in the garage tinkering, building, or fixing things. He and Lorraine also enjoyed visiting Heather in Bowmanville, exploring the Algonquin Park area, and occasionally traveling to Niagara Falls.
Visitation for John will be held at Goodfellow’s Funeral Home in Parham on Monday, May 5, from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m., followed by the service at 1:00 p.m. Interment will take place at Henderson United Church Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Henderson Cemetery Fund. Online memories and condolences can be shared with the family at www.goodfellowsfuneralhome.com.
