Shirley Young (Mitchell)

With heavy hearts we announce that Shirley Elizabeth Young passed away peacefully at her home in Perth, Ontario with family by her side in the early morning of October 13, 2023.

She was the beloved wife of Stanley Arthur Young (predeceased 2014). Cherished mother of David (Jane), Donald (Kathryn) and Ellen Hrziwnatzki (Peter). Dear sister of Charlotte Moore (late Eric) and sister-in-law to Patricia Mitchell.

Shirley was predeceased by her parents, Reginald and Charlotte Mitchell, brother Forde Mitchell, daughter Dianne Payne, and granddaughter Lyndsay Young.

She is survived by 9 grandchildren, 18 great grandchildren and 6 great great grandchildren.

Shirley was born in Ottawa and grew up in Ottawa West. She married her beloved Stanley at the age of 17 in 1943 and worked for the Canadian Red Cross while Stan served overseas in the RCAF during WWII. Shirley and Stan raised their family in Ottawa and many other cities in Ontario. Their favourite place was Palmerston Lake, where they spent most of their retirement years while enjoying many winters in Florida before moving to Perth, Ontario.

Shirley had a silver soul that shone endlessly like the sun. She had a heart of gold and welcomed everyone with a warm embrace that would brighten any dark day. Her memory will forever live in the hearts of her family, friends and all who were fortunate enough to have known her.

A celebration will take place at a later date.
