For the past several years, Covid 19 saw a marked decrease in outdoor activities that people were involved in. Now that things have opened up, the Dark Sky Preserve has seen a renewed interest and usage. This past August we had an event for the Perseid meteor shower and saw over 300 people show up at the site to catch a glimpse of these very bright meteors. Even with a nearly full moon, people came out in droves. The interest is not limited to weekends alone. Many bring their telescopes and cameras during the week to take advantage of some of the darkest skies anywhere.
The site boasts a 30’x 40’ concrete pad to set up telescopes, hydro and a washroom plus plenty of parking.
This weekend of September 23-25 the North Frontenac Amateur Astronomy Club is hosting the first annual “Festival of Stars” weekend. (For more information and to register go to everbright.com and go to the Festival of Stars site for more information and to register … it’s free.
The weekend will include seminars, a pizza truck, draws and family star talks in the evening, displays by Sky News Magazine and the Royal Astronomical Society of Canada.
For more information on the Festival of Stars and the North Frontenac Amateur Astronomy Club go to the Township of North Frontenac website and the Dark Sky Preserve Facebook page.
Here’s looking up!
