In a recent study, CBC reported that seven million people, especially those in small communities, are without a family doctor. In Ontario alone the number is two million.

On 31 May my doctor retired. I am now a number, as I have felt less than human in a search for a practitioner.

But let’s go back to the beginning of my Canadian health care experience. Well into my senior years; since birth I have enjoyed the privilege of free hands-on medical care. My routine was a yearly examination, blood work, shots and the like. Always healthy. Then, following an annual physical, my family doctor told me that I had cancer. Her role was very important. She fired the starting gun on a race that saved my life. Following up each year, ordering the tests that provide reassurance.

So begins the search, sending a letter of introduction to the Sydenham Medical Clinic. A good starting point as it is a five-minute drive from my home. A week later, I followed up with an in-person visit. I soon discovered that numbers are a nuisance. At reception, I was told that there was a freeze on new patients. I asked to be put on a waiting list. I was told we do not keep a waiting list. I asked for a suggestion. I was told to go to Kingston as there is a clinic on Sutherland Drive on outer Montreal Street. It has been reported that Kingston has lost 7 doctors to retirement in the past couple of months. Overwhelmed, I am sure that clinic will not welcome another number landing on their doorstep.

However, I did receive encouraging support on a visit to the Sydenham PharmaChoice. Bhavin Patel informed me that on 21 July he will be speaking at a S.A.L.T. presentation. This will be held at the Harrowsmith Free Methodist Church. He will provide information on the medications a pharmacist can now prescribe as well as online doctor services. To register, call the Grace Centre at (613) 376-6477.
