Each year in June, each High School in the Limestone District School board promotes one student as their Limestone Achiever. The criteria for the award is for well rounded individual to win. The students are high achievers academically, but non necessarily the student with the best grade point average in the school. Athletic achievement is a prerequisite, as are leadership qualities within the school and in the community at large.

In sending the list of winners this year, Jane Douglas-Charanduk, the long serving Communications Consultant with the board, said “the students were amazing again. Such talented young people.

Below are photos and excerpts from the testimonials for the achievers in the Limestone DSB High Schools in our readership area, North Addington Education Centre – Alyssa Borger, Granite Ridge Education Centre – Elayna Jackson, and Sydenham High School – Franklin Goodfellow

Alyssa Borger - North Addington Education Centre

As a student, Alyssa consistently demonstrates superior skills, attitude and work ethic. She has been a high academic achiever throughout her school career and has won multiple awards for having the highest academic average in specific courses as well as having the highest academic average for her year every year since grade nine. Alyssa plans to pursue a Bachelor of Environmental Geoscience at Trent University in September, and will be graduating with a Specialist High Skills Major Red Seal Diploma in Construction.

As an athlete, Alyssa has consistently represented our school over the years in a number of varsity athletics including volleyball, softball, track and field, and badminton. Besides being an athlete herself, Alyssa also supports programs that promote student athleticism and involvement both at the school level and at the community level.  In addition to school athletics, Alyssa maintains a very busy dance life.  Since the age of four, Alyssa has danced at the Quinte Ballet School in a variety of dances. 

Alyssa’s leadership is not limited to sports. She has always been one of our “go to” people. This year, Alyssa was an integral planner for the NAEC’s Chess Tournament, worked on designs for the revitalization of the school courtyard, and has been a part of the inter-school council. In the community, Alyssa has been an important member of the Mazinaw Lake Swim Program.

Franklin Goodfellow - Sydenham High School

Franklin Goodfellow is a Grade 12 student at Sydenham High School Franklin’s academic record is top-notch. He has maintained an average of 93% or higher in every one of his years in high school. problem solver, often looking for new challenges and extensions of his learning.

He is currently the Co-President of our Student Council after having served on Council since Grade 9; he is a key member of our school band, anchoring the brass section as a tuba player; he belongs to the Sydenham Chess Club; he has participated in Math competitions as a Junior and Senior Mathlete in the Kingston Math League Team Competitions, as well as writing the Euclid Math Contest this year; he is an active member of our Student Wellness and Advocacy Group. He also plays on the Sydenham soccer team and runs cross-country and is a member of the track and field team.

It is as a member of Student Council that his leadership shines. Among many other accomplishments, Franklin has organized the school dances, even jumping in as a guest DJ from time to time and has taken the lead in planning our Spring “Carnival” Festival that will happen in May. Franklin was also an integral part of the team that put together the school float for the Sydenham village Santa Clause Parade.

Elayna Jackson - Granite Ridge Education Centre

Academically speaking, Elayna’s excels in all subject areas, earning her the Proficiency Trophy for her cohort every single year.

At Granite Ridge, Elayna is an integral member of student, a key member of the varsity volleyball, three pitch and track and field teams. She has been team captain, Most Valuable Player and has proudly represented Granite Ridge as the GREC KASSAA All-Star.. A player with these strong skills could easily just float by on talent but she continually pushes herself to improve while she encourages her teammates and elevates the game.

Elayna has assisted with a number of our local organizations in fundraising and executing events, proving herself to be a valuable and reliable member of our community. She represents herself and her community well which is a reason why she became the LDSB Rural Student Trustee for the current school year.

With so many interests, talents and skills, Elayna’s future is full of possibilities but after some deliberation Elyana has decided to pursue a career as a teacher by attending Queen’s in the fall.
