COVID numbers steady as school year gets underway

Kingston Frontenac Lennox and Addington Public Health (KFLAPH) released their advice for students going back to school (see article below) last week.

The COVID statistics for the region have not changed that much over the last month, and the death toll has increased to 70, from 62 earlier in the summer.

There were 11 residents in hospital with COVID as of August 23, 3 of whom were in the intensive care unit.

The test positivity rate was 18.6%, which is own from its peak earlier in the month, but up over where it was for most of the June and July.

Wastewater data was up over where it has been for most of the summer in 2 of 3 sample locations, Amherstview and Kingston East, but not as high as it had been earlier in August at the Cataraqui Bay treatment plant, which saw a spike in early August.

I spite of continuing deaths from COVID, the per capita death rate in the region over the entire pandemic is still low when compared to the Province of Ontario, Canada as a whole, or the United States.

The overall per capita death rate in Ontario is 2.5 times higher than it is in KFL&A, the rate in Canada is almost 3 times higher, and the rate in the United States is 9 times higher.

67.4% of KFL&A residents over 12 years old have received 3 doses of vaccine, and 25.3% of residents over 18 years old have received 4 doses.

Close to 90% of residents over 5 years old have received 2 doses.
