Frontenac OPP is reminding outdoor adventure seekers to be prepared for changing weather and lighting conditions after hikers on 2 separate occasions became disoriented in the diminished lighting conditions and required police assistance in exiting Frontenac Provincial Park. While Frontenac Provincial Park is closed to camping, outdoor enthusiasts can still enjoy the hiking trails during the colder months.

Last month, there were 2 separate incidents where hikers called 911 to get assistance from police and Frontenac Provincial Park staff after getting turned around in the park once the sun began setting. The trails can be challenging to navigate in perfect lighting and weather conditions and to inexperienced hikers this becomes even more challenging in the dark. Planning ahead can make all the difference between a positive outdoor experience and one where you might require assistance.

  • Dress appropriately for the weather in layers to stay comfortable with the changing temperatures.
  • Ensure you have water and snacks with you, particularly if you're planning a longer hike.
  • Wear appropriate and if possible, waterproof footwear to keep your feet dry. Pack extra socks if you're carrying a pack.
  • Download the What3Words app in the event you do require assistance. This greatly assists emergency personnel with locating you quickly in an emergency.
  • Check the weather conditions and time of sunset before heading out. Remember - many hiking trails are deep in wooded/forested areas and the light diminishes far more quickly in that environment.
  • Make sure your cellphone is fully charged.
  • Consider purchasing a trail map to assist you in traversing the trails.

Hiking is an excellent and challenging way to get some physical activity in during good weather in the winter months. Planning ahead is always a good way to ensure a positive outdoor experience.
