Close to 100 music lovers crammed into the Burridge United Church on Friday night to take in an Australian concert given by Glenn Foster of Westport. Born and bred in Australia, Foster, a former teacher at Sydenham High School, incorporated poetry, story telling, quotations, songs and visual images while accompanying himself alternately on guitar, banjo and concertina.
Jason Pedherney of Westport accompanied Glenn on the didjeridoo, the long tube-like instrument native to Australia that produces a deep and vibrating drone, adding depth and mystery to the tunes.
As educational as it was entertaining, Foster provided a history of the country's settlement by Europeans as is told in the lyrics of the songs from that great island. He sang of wallabies, billy bongs, swagman, jumbucks, dingoes and waltzing matildas.
If you missed Glenn's performance you can catch him and Mike Freeman again at their CD Release party for "Pilot Me" a CD of straight country gospel music at the Westport United Church on July 19th.
