Mitchell Creek go-ahead partial victory

South Frontenac township has received approval to rebuild Mitchell Creek Bridge but with significant modifications to protect canoeing access and endangered species. The federal and provincial governments will also pay most of the costs for the redevelopment.

“We are happy that modifications will be made to the bridge to protect endangered turtles, allow canoeists good access to the creek and protect the safety of area residents,” said Ross Sutherland of the Friends of Mitchell Creek. “Our opposition to the mindless bureaucratic requirements of the Ministry of Transport also played a role in the federal government giving the Township significant money for the bridge. This is a real savings for the residents of Loughborough.”

The trade off in the Ministry was that extra money and changes at the bridge site to meet local concerns would balance a requirement that the bridge be built at the higher height demanded by Ministry bureaucrats. “We are worried that the higher bridge will increase boat traffic and have negative consequences on fishing, canoeing and the environment, but the Navigable Waterways officials dug in their heels and we could not convince the government to override them,” said Sutherland.
