David Visschedyk rolls through Sharbot Lake

by Jeff Green

Six weeks ago, David Visschedyk dipped his bicycle, and his artificial leg, in the Pacific Ocean, and two weeks from now he intends to dip both in the Atlantic Ocean at Halifax harbour. He has been cycling about 150 km per day, six days a week. This Monday, he cycled from Peterbrough to Sharbot Lake Provincial Park , en route to Ottawa , and stopped by the Sharbot Lake Beach with some local cyclists to a reception hosted by Central Frontenac Mayor Bill MacDonald and Mary Howes from the Frontenac chapter of the Canadian Cancer Society.

David set out with the relatively modest goal of raising $15,000 for The James Fund for Neuroblastoma Research at Sick Kids hospital in Toronto , but with two weeks, to go, he has almost raised over $75,000. With stops in major centres such as Ottawa , Montreal and Quebec City still ahead of him, the total will rise considerably. While in Sharbot Lake , David had a reunion with his Aunt Eleanor Hands from Kingston . For more information, go to Cyclingforcancer.ca.
