What did the pumpkin say to the pie baker? Could you use apple please!
I almost feel bad submitting a joke this week. To Jeff, the advertisers and all the readers, I am sorry you are yet again caught up in Canada Post issues. While local news is at a premium, I am not sure how this weekly NEWSPAPER could even remotely be considered a "flyer". A return to common sense would be wonderful.
Better late than never, huge happy birthday wishes go out to Nadine Hinch! I won't give an exact number, but I believe it is somewhere between 79 & 81!
As a community, we are very lucky to have the use of the facilities at Storrington Public School after hours. The track, and playground equipment are really such a bonus in a small, rural area. But just a very gentle and friendly reminder to please respect the property. If you have walked your pooch, please remember to "stoop and scoop" and to take home any other garbage you may have. And to those who have brought your vehicles into the yards, the ruts you leave are a real tripping hazard to the kids. Please remember, you are a guest in the children's play area.
News from the Pumpkin Patch! Deck the halls... actually no! Decorate your yards, porches and steps in time for the Battersea Pumpkin Festival! Again this year, there are prizes to be had for getting in the spirit of the Festival! The categories are fall/pumpkin or spooky! If you live on Battersea Rd, between Sunbury and Burnt Hills, or live in the immediate village, you are eligible. No need to nominate! Our panel of expert judges will just go for a drive on Friday October 3. If your house is decorated, it will be considered. Winners will be announced at the festival on Saturday October 4th. If you are not present (but where else would you be??) you will be contacted the following week.
Storrington Stinger News: Many thanks and congratulations go to Zak, who submitted the design for this year's entry sticker to the Battersea Pumpkin Festival.
Thursday September 25th is a busy day at the school. The Terry Fox run is set to go at 2pm. The fundraising goal is $1000. Come on Storrington district! We can do it!

News from the Flinton Community Garden: “It was a beautiful day for an Inaugural ‘Music In The Garden’ with Joanna Milligan. Some came for a quick visit and some stayed for the entire event. It was a happening place and I am grateful for you all. Thank you to everyone who spent their Sunday with us, in a beautiful green space among friends and neighbors. I wouldn’t have wanted to do this, with anyone other than Joanna Milligan. Thank you to the Township of Addington Highlands for your continued support, to Patricia Gray who gave us access to washroom facilities and power. To Deputy Reeve Fritsch and his wife Gail for joining us and helping me pack up. Thank you, Cathy Newcombe, President of the CDHS and Bill for stopping by as well. Thank you, Brian Kay for the awesome power extension, to Brian Milligan for some muscle this morning, Teri Woods for the tents……without my father- in- law Wayne, and brother- in- law Chris, I would have been lost. I can’t thank Susanne Quinlan (who recently retired from Gleaners Food Bank after 30 years) enough for your ongoing support and likewise to Pam Lemke who had an amazing event yesterday but always shows up to support her community and me. Pat Dubyk is an entirely other post but seeing her beautiful barn quilts on display today was magical. More to come! Watch for the new Addington Highlands Barn Quilt Trail. It is an honour to work with Pat and this is such an amazing opportunity for our community. The feedback was encouraging, supportive and kind.
As well, thank you to Gleaners Food Bank Tri County Warehouse for the donation of Heritage/Heirloom Seeds for the Flinton Accessible Community Garden. We will reach out to the Land O’Lakes Garden Club and share this lovely donation. Thank you for helping us continue to grow.
Here we grow again! The Township of Addington Highlands Roads Department continues to support our community garden. Special thanks to Brett and Rob. A huge shout out to KXO Timber Frame Istvan and Danielle who were onsite early this morning to guide the installation of our Sono tubes. We are so excited to show off their amazing work to our community, to our supporters, to our surrounding communities and to the County. Danielle who is a BCIN designer designed our layout with input from our team and builders. KXO designed the timber frame entrance, supplied the materials, built it, worked with our building inspector to meet all requirements with engineered drawings. It is a true honour for our community garden to welcome our community and our guests with such a beautiful entrance. Keep following us as we Grow!

September 26 – Line Dancing at ABC Hall – 10am to 11am - $5 at the door. Proceeds go towards hall maintenance.
September 28 – National British Home Child Day – Beacons of Light 2025 + Porch Light Tribute –This year, communities across Canada and abroad are invited to take part in the Beacons of Light Campaign, a national tribute organized by Home Children Canada, a registered charity dedicated to preserving the memory of the Home Children, and supporting their descendants. Between the 1860s and 1970s, children from poor and marginalized families, or abandoned (only 12% were orphans) in the British Isles were sent abroad under child migration plans in the belief that they would have a chance for a better life. Many kids were separated from siblings, endured harsh conditions, and were placed as indentured labourers on farms or as domestic workers. The Beacons of Light Tribute has united Canadians in remembrance by illuminating landmarks, monuments, and buildings in red, white, and blue, or in yellow – the latter representing Home Children Canada’s floral emblem, the sunflower. If you have Glo-Lighting on your house you might want to set them to yellow on Sep. 28th. Individuals are encouraged to participate in the “Porch Light Tribute” by leaving their outdoor lights on overnight on September 28th, symbolically leaving the light on for the children who never made it back home to Britain. In Tay Valley there was a handful of British Home children working on local farms. One lived on or nearby the Scotch Line in 1886; his name being lost to history. Another was 10 year old Alfred Mallindine who was placed on Marshal Armstrong’s farm near Maberly in 1899; Alf stayed until 1903.

Sharbot Lake
by Greg Rodgers
Well folks, things are winding down in Sharbot lake, and yet surprisingly just starting to warm up. We had a busy September of events, many of which happened over the past week. However, they are still some great opportunities ahead.
This Saturday, to mark the end of season for the Sharbot lake Farmers Market, organizers are hosting and end of season party, featuring a BBQ and Beer garden. Live music will be provided by the Blue Skies Orchestra. (Saturday, Sept 27, 9am; BBQ and Beer Garden 11am-2pm)
The extended warm weather means the possibility of more outdoor K&P Brewery Open Mic nights. Come and enjoy the outdoor stage for as long as it can be stretched out (and before we have to retreat indoors for the colder weather). Friday evenings ‘til closing

Please stay ‘road aware’ while driving around our country roads but take note of the changing colors. It is always a delight to take a road tour to admire the beauty of nature in our area – both Frontenac and Lanark. Drop us a note to let us know your favourite route or view. If you spot an interesting display that some crafty person has created in their garden or along the roadside we would love to hear about it.
Many of you have been harvesting the produce from your gardens and preserving the goodness to enjoy over the winter and those with a bit extra have generously shared with others in the community.
