“Wildfires can spread rapidly, and a small spark can lead to devastating consequences for the environment, wildlife, and communities. It's essential for everyone to practice fire safety, especially in regions that are prone to wildfires. Proper disposal of cigarettes and other smoking materials, as well as being mindful of local fire regulations and conditions, can help prevent these dangerous situations. If you smoke, fire safety isn’t just about the lighter. Most fatal fires in Ontario are linked to smoking. It can start with something simple: a cigarette that wasn’t fully put out. Use a deep, sturdy ashtray to put out your butt. Never toss them into planters, mulch, grass, or off a balcony. “Tossing a lit cigarette out of a vehicle window poses a serious fire risk, particularly in areas with dry vegetation and during wildfire season. Even "fire safe" cigarettes, which are designed to self-extinguish when not being actively smoked, can still ignite dry grass, leaves, or other flammable materials if they are thrown out while still burning”.

  Henderson
by Jean Brown

This coming Saturday, Aug. 23, the Kennebec and Area Seniors are collaborating with Kennebec Recreation folks to offer a bake sale from 9 – 1 at the Kennebec Hall alongside a corn hole tournament. Teaming up really doubles the fun and sounds like a hoot.

Speaking of collaboration: as folks start to dream of hunting season, the Arden Legion have teamed up with Bishop Lake Outdoor Group to offer a deer contest from Nov. 3-15 with weigh ins at the Arden Legion that include socializing and talking about the “one” that got away! The Frontenac Addington Trappers Council have donated a prize creating an excitingly appreciative atmosphere.

Our Arden Legion are next planning to re-do their floor surface, so that’s exciting for sure. The Legion has truly turned itself around with thanks to all volunteers.

My word, Harlowe Hall rocked at their open mic on Saturday afternoon with great performers, dancing, and yummy food. Then on Sunday, Roy Bradshaw of Harlowe and Napanee who is the president of the Ol Tyme Fiddlers offered his musical talents to the glory of God at Henderson United Church which church rocked in appreciation. Our area is truly appreciative of the musical talent by so many folks.

143rd Annual Maberly Fair – At the Maberly Fairgrounds just off Highway 7, at 4884 Bolingbroke Road, Sat. Aug 23rd, 2025 beginning at 8am.  if you wish to exhibit your talent you can bring all your entries in between the hours of 1 and 8pm on Friday Aug. 22.  Judging will begin early Saturday morning.  This year’s theme is “Denim and Plaid Shirts”.  Maberly fair began in 1882 and only ever shut down three times – twice by the world wars and then during covid. Maberly Fair lost a very valuable member this year in the man of Fred Barrett.  Fred ran our Maple Syrup and Honey sections for years.  He was also instrumental in building the sugar shack on our grounds.  In 1932 the Heritage building was blown away in a wind storm and by 1933 it had been rebuilt. In 1970 the old dining hall roof fell in due to heavy snows and by 1972 the Quonset building was erected.  In 2018 our treasurer absconded with all our monies but by 2019 she had been charged and convicted.  We have suffered losses but we pick ourselves up and just keep on moving forward.  This year on stage will be the very popular Three2Go band and others.  We will also hold our Light Horse Show beginning at 9am and our horse draw will begin at 1pm.  We will also host an antique car show on the grounds.  A petting zoo, sheep, cattle and poultry show will be on the grounds throughout the day.  Also, back by popular demand will be the zucchini races.  You can view all kinds of needlework, quilts, crafts, baking and bottled goods in our exhibit halls.  In 1894 John Morrow dug a potato to enter weighing 4 1/4 lbs so one can assume he won the biggest potato competition. In 1988 Della McGinnis at the age of 90 accumulated the most points in bottled goods and won with her homemade bread. Admission:  Adults $5, Youth ages 7 to 17 $3, children 6 and under FREE! Maberly Fair is always looking for volunteers and if you wish to help us out it would be greatly appreciated.  We have a need for volunteers for our parking area, gates and exhibit halls.  For more information on our fair contact Rosetta McInnes, 613-268-2548  This email address is being protected from spambots. Snow Road

Friends and neighbours joined family members at Crawford’s Cemetery on Saturday afternoon to pay respects and celebrate the life and legend of Dieter Neumann who passed away at the age of 96.  A quiet and gentle man, Dieter lived for over 50 years in this community with his late wife Elizabeth.  The shared stories from near and far demonstrated the love and respect for this man as a husband, father, grandfather (Opa), uncle and friend.

The Snow Road Presbyterian Church “perched on top of this little hill surrounded by rock” welcomed many visitors from near and far (Woodstock and Pembroke) along with the regular congregation on Sunday for the anniversary celebration.   Speaker Mario Sassi led the service and some hand clapping to the beautiful gospel songs by The Abrams.  Following the service, everyone enjoyed the conversation and luncheon at the community centre.  Thanks and appreciation to the numerous volunteers that keep the doors open at the three churches in this charge.

The Tritones are entertaining tonight (August 21st) at the Snow Road Community Centre.

The Ompah Fire Department celebrated their 50th anniversary on Saturday with very interesting displays, a barbeque and cake.  Hard work by many, many volunteers over those fifty years brought the department to where it is today.  Thanks to those men and women who donate their time and talent to keep us safe.  A shoutout to Milligan Meats in Cloyne who provided the meat for the barbeque; the burgers were delicious.

Mark your calendars for Saturday, August 23rd when the Clar-Mill Volunteers will be hosting a pulled pork dinner at the hall in Plevna.  Tickets are $15 per adult or $8 per child.  You can call/text Stephanie Lemke at 613-282-3276 for tickets, contact a

volunteer or drop in at the Plevna Library.

The annual Township Essential Services Fair is coming up on Saturday, August 23rd from 10am to 2pm at the Barrie Hall (14225 Hwy 41 in Cloyne).

Scott and Alison Gemmill, along with son Cole and daughter-in-law Jessica and

daughter Sierra attended the Thunder Valley Semi Truck races in Mattawa on the holiday weekend and entered their 1989 Classic Peterbilt in the Truck Show and Shine competition.   This truck has been a dream of Scott’s and it has been eight years in the making. It has been fully restored and custom painted and this was the first judged competition they had entered.  They brought home two trophies – Best Overall Custom and the People’s Choice, beating out over 100 entries.  This certainly appears to be an example of “Dream it – and then Make it Happen!”.

Sydenham

I wanna know... Will we ever see the rain?

A huge shoutout to the SFFR team. You have had a busy few weeks. True heroes.

This really should not be needed to be said. But please. It's so dry out there. The total burn ban is put in effect for a reason. Yes some fires are acts of nature which we cannot control. But acts of human negligence we can. Do your part.

It's that time again. Sydenham Legion is hosting their annual bass derby. $10 per ticket. Tickets available until Friday. Weigh in from 10-2 pm. Please no fish smaller than 1lb. Must be present to win. 1st prize is a sweet Pit Boss 3 Burner Griddle from Friendly Fires. Tickets at the one stop and legion. Should be a basstastic day.

Hope everyone is having a great summer. Stop in and enjoy an afternoon of Crokinole on Thursdays, especially on the 20th for International Crokinole Day. Every Thursday at the downstairs lounge of the Legion from 2-5 pm. The crokinole crew welcomes you.

Well mint seems to like this drought. So when life gives you mint... Make jelly.

Ingredients

1 1⁄2 cups of fresh mint, washed and packed

3 1⁄4 cups water

2 -3 drops green food coloring

1⁄2 teaspoon lemon juice

1 (1 3/4ounce) box pectin

4 cups granulated sugar

Directions

Crush mint leaves (I did a rough chop). Add water. Bring to a boil.

Remove from heat, cover and let stand 10 minutes. Strain and measure 3 cups of mint infusion.

Add food coloring and lemon juice. Add box of pectin powder , dissolve and bring to a rapid boil.

Add sugar. Cook fast, stirring occasionally until it comes to a rapid boil that cannot be stirred down, then cook 1 minute more.

Pour into sterilized jelly glasses and seal. I processed in the steam canner for 10 minutes to insure a good seal. Or refrigerate it.
