The cool of an August morning greeted Parham Fair goers last Saturday, but soon enough the heat of the day took over.
The Slip n Slide, scheduled to run for two hours, was mercifully kept up though the entire afternoon, by the helpful crew from the District 4 Firefighting unit.
This year’s one day Parham Fair was kicked off at 9am by a highly competitive Cattle Show, featuring 52 head of cattle, more than there have been in many years.
During the shoe kicking contest that was the first Country Fair Game event, the clear advantage went to those wearing sneakers over a large range of other types of footwear. Sneakers won several divisions, including the highly competitive adult contest, which was won by a flying high-top sneaker that soared over the infield.
A musical program featuring younger and more seasoned Parham/Sharbot Lake musicians, culminated in a set in the early evening by Shawn McCullough and Friends in a club-like atmosphere under a tent, complete with local beer. The frog show took place at 4:30pm, just as the temperature began to drop.
The horse pull, which was the one event most affected by the switch to a one day fair, was held on a Saturday Night for the first time, starting at 7pm. Sixteen teams participated in the pull, in front of a packed grandstand, winding up a long, eventful fair day.
It was a fitting end to the fair, after a challenging year for the Parham Agricultural Society.
