It is disturbing to read all the anti-American hostility being expressed in so much Canadian media, largely because the anger and mistrust is misplaced—and hurtful and insulting to most Americans who have long respected their Canadian neighbors, friends and partners.
If Canada would just send to Trump a case of maple syrup, beautifully wrapped and with a shiny gold bow, accompanied with a nice note stroking his ego and encouraging him to enjoy the gift, Trump would be placated and could claim another of his specious “Big Deal” victories.
All the tariff stuff with Canada would suddenly disappear.
The gift can even be the cheaper Grade B stuff—Trump likes McDonalds and is no connoisseur.
It can be delivered via the American ambassador to avoid Canada Post high rates. Not to worry about statehood, either. Trump really does not want Canada as the 51st state because too many new free thinkers would pose a political threat to him.
And besides, he has other messes to fix, you know.
