This past Saturday, the Cole Lake Free Methodist Church became a sanctuary of shared memories, gentle laughter, and tender farewells, as more than 60 loved ones came together to honour Sharon Ball’s lifetime of music, service, and compassion. The event, thoughtfully organized by the ladies of Cole Lake Church, unfolded with quiet elegance and heartfelt care.
As afternoon sunlight bathed the space in a golden glow, delicate floral arrangements dotted the tables—small touches that mirrored the gentle spirit of the woman they had gathered to celebrate. The air hummed softly as a ceiling fan stirred the warmth, creating a serene setting where hearts could pause and connect.
At the head table, Sharon sat radiant in pink, a hue that captured her joy and kindness. Her smile remained unwavering as one by one, guests stepped forward with tributes and stories, sharing how her life and music had shaped the soul of the church for nearly six decades. Colleen Ball-Zavrel, as Delegate to the Free Methodist Church in Canada for Cole Lake FMC, presented a letter of Recognition of Service from Bishop Linda Adams.
Two cakes, one chocolate and one vanilla, stood as sweet symbols of farewell. Frosted with the words “To New Adventures and God Be with You,” they marked her transition to British Columbia, where she’ll be closer to her two sons and grandchildren. Nearby, fresh fruit and cool drinks offered refreshment and fellowship following the presentations.
Former Pastor Shawn Craven extended his written note of well wishes, fond memories, and thanks for the over 10 years they served together.
Lloyd Lee, Chairman of the Church Board, offered heartfelt thanks for Sharon’s deep commitment over the years. In every role—whether as a personal support worker, teacher-in-training, secretary, or volunteer—she gave generously and without hesitation. Her musical talent was exceptional: she could hear a melody once and bring it to life on the organ keys.
Jean Freeman, one of her close friends, recounted her contributions (from birth onwards) that extended beyond music. She sang with the Jubilaires, even making a recording, and served as secretary for both the Verona Women’s Christian Temperance group and the Canadian WCTU. Her consistent acts of faith and service inspired others to live with purpose and grace.
As Pastor Joe Schaefer and his wife, Sherry, sang, they had the congregation join their voices in a modified tribute song (Leaving on a Jet Plane), swaying gently as the melody filled the fellowship hall and spilled out into the summer air. You could feel a shared energy in every note.
In a touching moment, former Pastor Jim Tysick and his wife Catherine, friends for life, presented an acrostic tribute and a litany of stories, including Clifford books and creative birth notices.
It went like this:
S – Supportive
H – Hopeful
A – Artistic
R – Resilient
O – Owl (night)
N – Nice
When the final speeches faded, Sharon stood—grateful and overwhelmed with the attendance—offering humble words of thanks. The crowd rose, applauding not just her service but the boundless heart she shared with them all.
‘You're leaving on a jet plane, don’t know when you’ll be back again’…God bless, safe travels!
