Mental Health Awareness Month is celebrated in May, and works to reduce stigma surrounding mental health, encourage people to seek support, and educate the general public about mental health and how they can access support. May 5-9 specifically focuses on youth mental health. Granite Ridge Education Centre (GREC) Student Council recognized Youth Mental Health Week with a series of events and outreach from service providers.
This year we hosted a Youth Services Fair on May 6th. The Youth Services Fair included 14 youth servicing groups/ agencies who helped educate the student body about available mental health services and programs accessible to them. This was an amazing event attended by youth in grades 7-12. We hope to make this event even bigger next year!
The PORCH (portable outreach care hub) with Maltby Centre also attended the school as another resource for students. They did mental health trivia to win prizes and handed out food to students grades 7-12.
GREC is very fortunate to have the support of many different service providers and staff such as Emily, the Adolescent Care Worker, KAIROS, The Maltby Centre, KFLA Public Health, Rural Frontenac C.S Youth Program, and SAC-Kingston. Each assures that all of our students have access to the resources they need, right from school.
Now that the school year has come to an end we are looking forward to the fall when the new Student Council will host even more events to engage and support youth at GREC.
If you wish to be informed about future events, follow GREC Student Council on Instagram and Facebook. Student Council makes an effort to keep their social pages up to date, with information about various events in the school and community.
