In celebration of the 150th anniversary of the completion of the K & P Railway north from Kingston to Sharbot Lake in 1876, the Central Frontenac Railway Heritage Society is adding a new piece of rolling stock to its collection. The society has managed to find and procure a rare, vintage 1922, wooden-sided, Canadian Pacific caboose that was being sold by the Township of Madawaska Valley.

Having met the prescribed conditions of sale, in particular, the preservation of the caboose’s historical value and the intention to make it available for public viewing, the CFRHS now has the challenging task of moving the caboose from Barry’s Bay to Sharbot Lake and finding the funds to do so. The caboose was originally built by the Canadian Car & Foundry Company and has been partially restored by a group of dedicated volunteers. The CFRHS is extremely excited by this acquisition. As well as being a showpiece on exhibit at the Railway Heritage Park in Sharbot Lake, it will create additional space to house historical displays and artifacts. Positioned on the track with our 1976 steel caboose, it will provide an interesting comparison for viewers to enjoy.

Fundraising for this venture is no small feat, and the CFRHS is presently looking at a variety of ways to find the necessary funds to relocate this vintage caboose. One way is to search out possible benefactors that would being willing to support our efforts. Our society is a government authorized, non-for-profit organization, and, as such, is able to provide a tax-deductible receipt to individuals or businesses that are willing to donate to this project.    The Central Frontenac Railway Heritage Society is a very active group and is proud of what it has created over the years in accomplishing our mission to preserve and promote our local railway history. It looks forward to the arrival of our next acquisition.
