Popular Victoria Day Event Returns to Seed to Sausage
The tourist season will kick off in style on Road 38, south of Sharbot Lake, next weekend.
“The Day of the Pig” was first held in 2012 at the Seed to Sausage factory store to mark the opening of the store for the summer season on the Saturday of the long weekend (May 17)
Featuring an open spit roasted pig and lots of other food, mostly suited for carnivores, good local beer and cheese and chocolate from what were also relatively new local food producers, the Day of the Pig brought a profile for local food to residents of Frontenac County, and visitors from as far away as Toronto.
The “Day” grew over the next few years, and eventually moved to the beach at Sharbot Lake in 2016 and 2017. With a change in focus for Seed to Sausage, a more low key “Day” was held at the store in 2018.
Since then, between business changes and the COVID pandemic, the “Day of the Pig” has been on hold. This year it is back, again featuring a spit roasted whole pig, pit fired chickens and ribs, Back 40 Cheese, Fine Chocolate by Ludwig, Kick and Push Brewing, and oyster shucking.
An old friend of both Seed to Sausage and Sharbot Lake, Tom Savage and Dead Root Revival will provide live music, and there will be other surprises as well.
And best of all, the Day of the Pig is a free entry event. But bring some money and your appetite and thirst. The Day of the Pig runs from 11am-5pm, 12821 Highway 38.
