The AFAR Committee submitted an Application for Incorporation to the Ministry of Government Services in January 2009 with the mandate of developing a not-for-profit community radio station. Once incorporation is approved it will be a separate entity and no longer associated with the township. This arrangement will allow AFAR to apply for many sources of funding that would not have been otherwise available.

Achievement of a local not-for-profit radio station in the Land O’ Lakes area will be instrumental in the promotion and growth of all aspects of our community by: 1) providing listeners with pertinent local news, weather and emergency information; 2) giving local businesses an opportunity to advertise their products and services at a reasonable cost; 3) providing a voice for municipal councils, churches, schools, service and other community groups; 4) promoting the talent of our local performers; and 5) providing multi-cultural programming respecting the demographic makeup of the area.

AFAR hired a broadcast engineer to determine if the desired broadcast area could be achieved. The report shows that the minimum area covered by the prescribed signal could extend past Denbigh in the north, Tweed and Marlbank in the south, Mountain Grove in the east and Ormsby in the west. The AFAR committee has received an offer from TVO to lease space on its tower located just south of Bon Echo Park and discussions are continuing with the goal of finalizing those arrangements.

AFAR is looking for individuals to help make community radio in the Land O’ Lakes a reality. Those with technical skills in the broadcast industry are much in demand, but all assistance is welcome. Volunteers are also needed to help with AFAR’s Second Annual Golf Tournament, which will take place on Saturday, July 11, 2009. The cost of the tournament includes 18 holes of golf, steak dinner and live entertainment.
