“Perhaps instead of trying to get a doctor to move here we could try and get one to come up two or three days a week from Napanee or Belleville,” Anderson said, referring to the fact that the township’s doctor recruitment strategy has yet to yield results.

“It is one thing to recruit a doctor into a public clinic, but our doctor runs a private clinic, so we can’t push it,” said Reeve Henry Hogg.

Deputy Reeve Helen Yanch took a bit of a longer term perspective, saying, “This whole doctor thing has been gong on for 32 years. We had rotating doctors back then and it worked out well. Then we wanted a full-time doctor, and we were lucky enough to get one, but in the future we’ll have to see.”

The committee is to check with the City of Belleville, which has recruited 17 doctors in the past couple of years, to see if one or more might want to work in the north some of the time. Reeve Hogg said he would check with Doctor Tobia to see if it is an idea he likes.

Planters planted – The Land O’ Lakes Garden club has already seeded the 30 planters that were built by students at North Addington Education Centre. Some of the planters have been seeded for shade and some for full sun. They will be distributed to 30 businesses on Hwy. 41 in early June.

Werner Lips steps down as LOLTA chair – Although he remains on the board of the Land O’ Lakes Tourist Association, Werner Lips of the Swiss Inn at Denbigh announced he will not remain as chair of the organization. LOLTA General Manager Terry Shea told the committee that Lips has been the chair for 20 years. A new chair will have to be found from the 10-member executive that was elected at LOLTA’s recent AGM.

Eastern Ontario grant money – Steve Paul, Economic Development Manager for Lennox and Addington County, announced that the $10 million Federal Eastern Ontario Economic Development Program is being renewed for 2008, and that an $80 million, 4-year provincial Eastern Ontario Development fund will be announced in April. Some of the money will go to programs with a regional slant, but there will be opportunities for smaller projects as well, he said.
