Remington acclaimed as LFL&Afederal Liberal candidateby Jeff Green

Former Napanee Mayor Dave Remington will represent the Liberal Party in Lanark, Frontenac, Lennox and Addington in the next federal election, which could come as early as next month.

Remington was the only nominee for the candidacy, and the nomination meeting, which was held at the Piccadilly Hall, became an opportunity for party faithful to meet and look forward to the next election.

In a reversal of roles, former MP Larry McCormick will serve as Remington’s campaign manager in the next election. Dave Remington was Larry McCormick’s parliamentary assistant during McCormick’s last term as MP, and managed McCormick’s unsuccessful campaign against current LFL&A MP Scott Reid in June of 2004.

“I’m an optimist about Canada and the political process,” Remington said in a press release that followed his nomination. “My kind of Canada is inclusive. It’s the kind that has been developed over the years by Liberal governments whose contributions have included Medicare, the Canada Pension Plan, Old Age Pension without the means test, Canada’s own flag and new protection for our individual freedoms through the Charter of Rights and Freedoms. And when the Liberal government lost in the election last year, it left Canada’s economy in remarkably strong shape – eight straight balanced budgets, the best performance of any of the G8 countries.

“I’m happy to be a candidate in Lanark Frontenac Lennox & Addington because I care deeply about our country. I want to use my experience, and listen to the people and to serve them well.”

Dave Remington is currently working as a business development and communications specialist in L&A and Frontenac Counties.

In the last federal election, held in January 2006, Conservative Scott Reid won with 51.1% of the popular vote. The Liberal candidate, Geoff Turner, finished second with 24.7% of the vote.

The timing of any future federal election has been the subject of much speculation, which has only been fuelled by the results of this week’s provincial election in Quebec.
