North Frontenacwoman abuse awareness campaign

by Kathleen Hatt

K3C Community Counselling Centres received funding to launch a woman abuse prevention campaign in Frontenac County. Neighbours, Friends and Families is a province-wide initiative with the purpose of raising awareness about the warning signs of woman abuse and engaging community members in effectively responding to woman abuse. For more information about the campaign, please visit www.neighboursfriendsandfamilies.on.ca.

The NFF web site provides helpful information about how to talk to men who are abusive, identifying the warning signs of women who are at risk and helping a woman build a safety plan.

The intent of the campaign is to recognize the warning signs of woman abuse, and to support women and other members of the community who are affected by woman abuse locate supportive resources in the community.

Kingston, Sydenham, Verona and Sharbot Lake have natural leaders in government, media, community service organizations, service clubs and faith-based organizations who can play an important role in the delivery of information. The aim of NFF is to reach neighbors, friends and family members of women and children who are experiencing abuse.

These recent statistics are from our community: January to March 2007 - Kingston Police reported there were 230 occurrences in which police were called for domestic violence and no charges were laid due to no reasonable grounds. Fifty nine charges were laid, 50 perpetrators were male. No dual charges were laid (both parties charged at same time).

In 2006, Kingston Interval House reported having an occupancy rate of 103% and having sheltered over 300 women and children.

Together we can change attitudes about woman abuse so that the responsibility for preventing it is shared by the whole community…”Domestic violence is everybody’s business.”
