The Awards were inaugurated at the first garlic festival (Perth Garlic Festival) on August 16 in 1997 and have been conducted at other Garlic Festivals in the region in following years to provide greatest opportunity for competition. They are open to all garlic growers in Eastern Ontario , whether home or commercial gardeners, and growers do not have to be participants in the host festival to enter.

The purpose of the competitions is to encourage excellence in the local growing and production of garlic and to reward such excellence by the presentation of awards.

David Hahn achieved the most total points in the four required events, walking away with the Woodman Trophy as Champion Garlic Grower for 2006. He received a certificate of award, rosette and a cash prize of $100, donated by the National Farmers Union.

The Reserve Champion, Ken Willis, received the Woodman 2 Trophy, certificate, rosette and a cash prize of $50, donated by the festival organizers, Connaught Acres Farm of Chesterville. Ken is the head gardener at Bellevue House in Kingston, the historic residence of Sir John A. MacDonald, the first prime minister of Canada. Presentation of awards was made during the festival by Paul Pospisil, director, Garlic Awards Foundation. Judging was done by Ina Poole, OHA Judge, of Chesterville, in accordance with the official judging standards for garlic.

The Woodman Trophy (Eastern Ontario Garlic Awards) Competitions are the official garlic competitions conducted annually in the Eastern Ontario region by the Garlic Awards Foundation.
